Siksika Irrigation Land Corporation - SILC
Siksika Irrigation Land Corporation was established in 1995 to manage irrigated land for leasing purposes to potential tenants. A Head lease agreement was signed between the Queen in Right of Canada and SILC for leasing of Agriculture land from the Siksika Nation for 15-year period. The lease agreement grants SILC the authority to lease land to potential tenants at fair market value for irrigated and dry land within the Should Irrigation Block - Stage One.
The Head Lease is comprised of 5,269 acres of irrigated land and 1,103 acres of dry land for a total of 6,372.5 acres which are subleased to three tenants primarily focused on Timothy hay production, sod farms, mint crops and processing plant, and irrigated crops such as canola, barley and wheat.
As part of the Stage One- Development Project, SILC acquired 33 irrigation pivot systems and associated infrastructure in 1991. SILC leases buildings and equipment to the irrigation tenants as an added value investment. Included in the building and facility rentals are the following assets:
Twelve Grain Bins
Two Hay Storage Building
Recently, SILC entered into a three-year contract with a Siksika Nation member for mechanical maintenance services. The contract covers operation and maintenance of the pivot system and associated infrastructure.
